Random Phonecam Shots

My phone takes some pretty crappy pics, but at least it's always with me. Here are the feral finds I've finally gotten around to downloading:

06/04/2005
Walnut Creek, CA
On the way to Safeway... a pair.

06/14/2005
Lafyette, CA
On the way to Lunardi's... another pair. We passed by a bunch of graduation parties on the way to the store. Maybe some newly free grad tossed her shoes along with her cap.

And later that day...
06/14/2005
Pleasant Hill, CA
Had to go to Navlet's to get dirt. Smelly dirt. Flip flop in the middle of the road outside the store.

San Diego is Fun, get a Car

Back from San Diego. If you go, rent a car. Yeah, the bus maps make it look like getting to the Zoo is easy, but the fact is that it's way easier to just drive. Pretty cool place though. Had George Bush's brother for a cab driver the first day; he was all about closing down the boarders and such.

Zoo: Best zoo I've been to. Animals wern't pacing and thrashing around trying to get out. My wife happened to glance over the raised catwalk we were on and spotted flip-flop #1. This, of course, prompted me to look over every raised area we walked upon, and I did see lots of sunglasses, and one backpack, but no more shoes.

Another SD highlight: Karl Struss Brewery. Great beer, great food (which is american food, and I'm rarely impressed), good service, and they San Diego Padres vs. San Francisco Giants baseball games were always shown when they were playing. Giant's got jacked, as we all know by now, but it was fun. Flip-flop #2 was right outside the bar.

No New Sightings, But...

Craigslist! I need to learn to keep my eye on the art's forum because people have started talking about the project independend of my prompting posts. So, here's what they've said:

Feral shoes on the brain... <> 05/11 20:25

Y'all are starting to remind me of New Mexican ghost stories. When the Spanish conquistadors emerged to attack the indians, in some places they cut off one of all the indians' feet of 'conquered' peoples. One thing I remember most about living in NM was the occasional finding of feral shoes with feet still in them on the hiking trails in the mountains, and the accompanying ghost stories of the indians taking revenge on the white and spanish man for the cultural abominations. One time, there was a bronze statue of Don Juan de Onate whose foot was cut off, even on a bronze! You have to admit, that was one slick vandal!

Archaeologists find 2,000-year-old feral shoe <> 05/11 06:29

Feral Glove but missed the shoe! < kunstler45> 05/03 13:57:02

And...

regarding the posts about feral shoes?? < ssf > 05/03 17:27:50 ring a bell? The artist who wanted reports when we saw them so she could photo 'em?

May Flowers

Not many flowers really. I'm posting 3 finds even though only one of them really counts. The first one was next to a a dumpster, which in turn was outside a thrift shop. Guess that's like claiming victory finding pizza boxes behind a Dominos. Oh well.

Next, the Thai Kwon-Do kids. There was an art festival/fair in WC this weekend. Pretty much the same as every other art-on-main-street fest here in northern CA, where artists from around the world come to sell their fare. I really like some of it, and we've bought several pieces from these artists over the years. Anyway, today a Thai Kwan-Do teacher had all his little muchkins out doing a demonstration, and I took a picutre, not of them (you fool!) but of their little shoes all lined up behind them.

Finally, the real find: a very small child's pair of shoes, with socks. I'm thinking the parents were wrangling the somehow barefoot kid into their safty seat and forgot to pick up the sneakers.

Just Follow the Signs

On Saturday I went to 4th Street area Berkeley with my wife, who had to work for a few hours. Since everything was closed at that hour, I decided to wander around, not that there is much to do on 4th Street anyway, since there are so many stores. Right. Huh? Oh yeah -- 4 Street in Berkeley is one of these manufactured "Main Street" areas. Once upon a time there wasn't much there except lumber yards, loading docks, fish grottos, and other areas that would benefit from being right next to the Amtrak tracks. But at some point the city (or more likely developers) decided to tornado-drop a manufactured retail neighborhood here, and many standard yuppie stores landed: Sur La Tab, Crate and Barrel, Some Random High Design Store... Ok, that might be a bit harsh, because there are quite a few family run stores here, including a diner, music store, book store, etc. Regardless, they were all closed at 8am.

Berkeley has a Potter's Guild, which is a, uh... like a guild. Of Potters. Sometimes they do shit with glass, too. They pool their resource to share work space, gallery space, kilns, and such. Several times each yeah they advertise a sale, and they had signs advertising the sale this weekend, so I started following them. Below are 3 feral shoe finds I found while I walked.

First up, Cedar at 2nd Street. I had liked some of the Ruku mugs here, but they were closed. This shoe was next to the fence, and after looking a bit harder I found it's pair buried in the grass behind it.

Location: Cedar at 2nd Street, Berkeley, CA. Map.

Description: Two leather shoes, no laces
Notes: Luckily I looked in the brush and found the other one.

Berkeley Potter's Guild: shoe at the bottom of the fence.

Berkeley Potter's Guild: shoe right by the train tracks.

Berkeley Potter's Guild: shoe by itself... Or is it?

Berkeley Potter's Guild: shoe closeup. Good thing they took the laces.

Berkeley Potter's Guild: hey, there's the other one!
Berkeley Potter's Guild: other shoe buried in the brush.

Backtracking a bit, I followed the signs towards another Berkeley Potter's Guild gallery, and quickly found this other feral shoe.

Date/Time: 05/07/2005
Location: Jones at 4th Street, Berkeley, CA. Map.
Spotted By: Me
Description: Brown leather slip-on "jungle mach"
Notes:

Berkeley Potter's Guild: signs -- white one towards the first find, yellow one towards the second.

Berkeley Potter's Guild: following the signs I found another shoe

Berkeley Potter's Guild: second find on the walk

Berkeley Potter's Guild: feral find #2 closeup.

Berkeley Potter's Guild: feral shoe #2

Since the street look interesting I decided to head away from the trail a bit, heading in the opposite direction of the Potter's Guild sign. Within a block I found these shoes on the power line. Normally I don't count these, since they are of a different species than the feral's I document, but these suckers were way the hell up there! I'd say about 3 stories up.

Date/Time: 05/07/2005
Location: Jones at 3th Street, Berkeley, CA. Map.
Spotted By: Me
Description: Black sneakers
Notes: Nice toss

Berkeley Potter's Guild: off the path I found these shoe on the power line.

Berkeley Potter's Guild: shoes on the power line

Berkeley Potter's Guild: shoes on the power line about 2 1/2 stories up

Berkeley Potter's Guild: shoes higher than the train track crossing guard.
